    Dutasteride is a dual inhibitor of 5α-reductase. It inhibits both type 1 and type 2, 5α-reductase isoenzymes, which are responsible for the conversion of testosterone to 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the androgen primarily responsible for hyperplasia of glandular prostatic tissue.
    How to use Dutasteride: Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Do not chew, crush or break it. Dutasteride may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. Administration: May be taken with or without food. Adult Dose: Oral Benign prostatic hyperplasia Adult: 500 mcg once daily for at least 6 mth. Hepatic impairment: Severe: Contraindicated. Renal Dose: Renal impairment: Dose adjustment not necessary
    Plasma concentrations may be increased when used concomitantly w/ moderate or potent CYP3A4 inhibitors.

    Pregnancy Category X. Dutasteride is contraindicated for use in women.
    Precaution: Excreted in semen therefore use of condom is recommended. Women of childbearing potential should avoid handling dutasteride capsules. Advisable to exclude other causes of benign prostatic hypertrophy (e.g. prostate cancer, infection) before initiating therapy. Lactation: Excretion in milk unknown/contraindicated
    In volunteer studies, single doses of Dutasteride up to 40 mg (80 times the therapeutic dose) for 7 days have been administered without significant safety concerns. In a clinical study, daily doses of 5 mg (10 times the therapeutic dose) were administered to 60 subjects for 6 months with no additional adverse effects to those seen at therapeutic doses of 0.5 mg. There is no specific antidote for Dutasteride. Therefore, in cases of suspected overdosage symptomatic and supportive treatment should be given as appropriate, taking the long half-life of Dutasteride into consideration.

    Dutasteride has antiandrogenic properties. It inhibits 5alpha-reductase, thus preventing the conversion of testosterone to 5?-dihydrotestosterone which is the main androgen involved in causing prostate enlargement.
