Osmotic purgatives

Sodium picosulfate is a stimulant laxative that in conjunction with magnesium citrate, produces a purgative effect on stools. In a multicentre, observational study comprising of patients undergoing colonoscopy, more than 93% of the patients receiving sodium picosulfate-containing preparations reported the colon cleansing effect to be effectiveSodium picosulfate is a contact laxative. It inhibits the absorption of water and electrolytes, and increases their secretion into the intestinal lumen. It is hydrolyzed by colonic bacterial enzyme, sulfatase, to form an active metabolite bis-(p-hydroxy-phenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM), which acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate colonic peristalsis

How to use Sodium picosulfate: Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Sodium picosulfate may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. Administration: May be taken with or without food. Adult Dose: Oral Constipation Adult: 5-10 mg as a single dose, usually at bedtime. Bowel evacuation before investigational procedures Adult: 10 mg, w/ Mg citrate, given in the morning and again in the afternoon of the day before examination. Child Dose: Oral Constipation Child: 1 mth to <4 yr 0.25 mg/kg. Max: 5 mg; 4-10 yr 2.5-5 mg; >10 yr 5-10 mg. Doses are usually given at night. Bowel evacuation before investigational procedures Child: 1 mth to <4 yr 0.25 mg/kg. Max: 5 mg; 4-10 yr 2.5-5 mg; >10 yr 5-10 mg. Doses are usually given at night.

Increased risk of electrolyte imbalance w/ diuretics or adreno-corticosteroids. Increased sensitivity to cardiac glycosides resulting from electrolyte imbalance. Reduced laxative action w/ antibiotics.

Common - Vomiting - Headache - Nausea Abdominal discomfort (e.g. abdominal pain and cramps), diarrhoea. Rarely, allergic reactions (e.g. skin reactions, angioedema).

Pregnancy: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Long experience has shown no evidence of undesirable or damaging effects during pregnancy.Lactation: Clinical data show that neither the active moiety of sodium Picosulfate (BHPM or bis-(p hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane) nor its glucuronides are excreted into the milk of healthy lactating females.

Precaution: Childn. Pregnancy and lactation.

Laxatives when taken in chronic overdosage may cause chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypokalemia, secondary hyperaldosteronism, and renal calculi. Renal tubular damage, metabolic alkalosis, and muscle weakness secondary to hypokalemia have also been described in association with chronic laxative abuse.

Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light & moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Sodium picosulfate is a locally acting laxative which has a dual action of stimulating the mucosa of both the large intestine causing colonic peristalsis and of the rectum causing increased motility and a feeling of rectal fullness.

There are no reports of undesirable or damaging effects during pregnancy or to the foetus attributable to the use of this product. Use of the drug should be avoided during the first trimester. Clinical data show that neither the active moiety of sodium Picosulfate (BHPM or bis-(p hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane) nor its glucuronides are excreted into the milk of healthy lactating females.
