    Angiotensin-ll receptor blocker
The first angiotensin II receptor blocker that is orally active without a peptide is losartan potassium. It binds to the AT1 receptor, which is present in numerous tissues (such as the heart, kidneys, adrenal glands, and vascular smooth muscle), and inhibits several critical biological processes, such as vasoconstriction and the production of the hormone aldosterone that causes hypertension.
How to use Losartan Potassium: Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Losartan Potassium may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. Administration: May be taken with or without food. Adult Dose: Oral Hypertension Adult: 50 mg once daily, may increase to 100 mg/day as single dose or in 2 divided doses if needed. Patients w/ intravascular volume depletion: Initially, 25 mg once daily. Diabetic nephropathy in Type 2 diabetes mellitus Adult: Initially, 50 mg once daily, may increase to 100 mg once daily depending on BP response. Heart failure, Hypertension and Left Ventricular Hypertrophy, Stroke risk reduction of hypertensive or LVH patients: Adult: Initially, 50 mg once daily. Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg daily should be added and/or the dose of Losartan should be increased to 100 mg once daily followed by an increase in hydrochlorothiazide to 25 mg once daily based on blood pressure response Child Dose: Hypertension <6 years: Safety and efficacy not established Child: >6 yr 20-50 kg: Initially, 0.7 mg/kg. May decrease plasma levels / fluconazole and rifampicin. May increase serum lithium levels and toxicity. May antagonise hypotensive effect and increase risk of renal impairment w/ NSAIDs. Increased risk of hyperkalaemia w/ K-sparing diuretics (e.g. amiloride, triamterene, spironolactone), K supplements or K-containing salt substitutes. Potentially Fatal: May increase nephrotoxic, hyperkalaemic and hypotensive effect w/ aliskiren in patients w/ diabetes and renal impairment (GFR <60 mL/min).
Losartan potassium is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to the active ingredient or any component of the drug. Concomitant use w/ aliskiren in patients w/ diabetes and renal impairment (GFR <60 mL/min). Severe hepatic impairment. Pregnancy.

Category D for pregnancies. If Losartan Potassium is given during the second or third trimester of pregnancy, the risk to the fetus increases. Given that numerous medicines are excreted in human milk and that it is unknown whether losartan potassium is one of them, a choice should be taken regarding whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking the medication, taking into account the significance of the medication to the mother.
Precaution: Volume-depleted patients including patients on high-dose diuretics. Patients w/ bilateral renal artery stenosis , aortic or mitral stenosis. Renal and mild to moderate hepatic impairment. Lactation. Monitoring Parameters Monitor BP, electrolytes and renal function. Lactation: Unknown if excreted in milk; not recommended
Keep dry and away from heat and light. Keep out of children's reach.
    Angiotensin-ll receptor blocker
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It selectively and competitively blocks the vasoconstricting and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively antagonising its binding to AT1 receptors.
Pregnancy Categories C (first trimester) and D (second and third trimesters).
