Uses of Hytis:
- Anxiety
Pruritus, Allergic conditions, Generalized anxiety disorder, Psychoneurosis, Chronic urticaria, Atopic or contact dermatoses, Pre- or post-operative sedation
Porphyria, neonates, pregnancy, lactation.
Sedating Anti-histamine
Hydroxyzine, a piperazine derivative, blocks histamine H1-receptors on effector cells of the GI tract, blood vessels and resp. It is a sedating antihistamine w/ antimuscarinic and significant sedative properties. It also possesses skeletal muscle relaxing, bronchodilator, antiemetic and analgesic properties.
How to use
Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride:
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it.
Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
Administration:
May be taken with or without food.
Adult Dose:
Oral
For symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis and as an adjunct in organic disease states in which anxiety is manifested:
Adult: 50-100 mg 4 times daily.
For use in the management of pruritus due to allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria and atopic and contact dermatoses, and in histamine-mediated pruritus:
Adult: Initially, 25 mg at night increased if required up to 25 mg 3-4 times daily.
As a sedative when used as a premedication and following general anesthesia:
Adult: 50-100 mg.
Hepatic impairment: Reduce total daily dose by 33%.
Child Dose:
Oral

Child: 0.6 mg/kg.
Hepatic impairment: Reduce total daily dose by 33%.

Additive or may potentiate CNS depressant effects of opiates or other analgesics, barbiturates or other sedatives, and anaesth. MAOIs and TCAs potentiate antimuscarinic effects.

Dizziness, ataxia, fatigue, drowsiness, hallucination, seizure, dry mouth, nervousness, xerostomia, involuntary movements, slurred speech, headache, paraesthesia, tremor, blurred vision, resp depression, pruritus, rash, urticaria, allergic reaction.
Pregnancy Category C. Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus.Nursing mothers: It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. Since many drugs are so excreted, hydroxyzine should not be given to nursing mothers.
Precaution:
Renal and hepatic impairment; narrow-angle glaucoma; epilepsy; prostatic hypertrophy; bladder neck obstruction; asthma; COPD. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lactation: Excretion in milk unknown; use with caution
Symptoms: Excessive sedation, hypotension (rare).Management: Symptomatic and supportive treatment. Empty stomach immediately by inducing emesis or by gastric lavage. Admin IV fluids and norepinephrine or metaraminol if hypotension occurs.
Store between 15-30° C. Protect from light.
