Clonidine stimulates α2-adrenoceptors in the brain stem which results in reduced sympathetic outflow from the CNS, and a decrease in peripheral resistance, heart rate, BP and renal vascular resistance.
How to use Clonidine Hydrochloride: Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Clonidine Hydrochloride may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. Administration: May be taken with or without food. Hypotensive action may be potentiated by diuretics and vasodilators. Effects of clonidine antagonised by TCAs and centrally-acting alpha-blockers. May enhance toxicity due to digitalis, lithium. May antagonise oral hypoglycaemics. Potentially Fatal: Hypnosedatives, antihistamines and alcohol may cause excessive drowsiness in patients on clonidine. Withdrawal of clonidine in patients receiving noncardioselective ?-blockers may result in rebound BP. Acute severe hypotension following concomitant administration of clonidine and chlorpromazine or haloperidol.
Hypersensitivity. Disorders of cardiac pacemaker activity and conduction. Pregnancy and lactation.

Category C: Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus.
Precaution: Withdraw gradually, renal impairment, tasks that require mental alertness. Cerebrovascular disease, ischaemic heart disease, MI. IV inj should be administered slowly. Occlusive peripheral vascular disorders, history of depression. Lactation: Distributed in breast milk; caution advised
Symptoms: Lethargy, pupillary constriction, hypotension, hypothermia, bradycardia, decreased or absent reflexes, irritability, miosis, weakness, somnolence (including coma) and resp depression (including apnoea). Paradoxical HTN may occur. Management: Perform gastric lavage following recent ingestion or admin activated charcoal and/or a cathartic. Supportive treatment may include admin of atropine sulfate for symptomatic bradycardia; IV fluids and/or inotropic sympathomimetic agents for hypotension; vasodilators for HTN. Naloxone may be used as adjunct for clonidine-induced resp depression, hypotension and/or coma.
    Store between 20-25°C.
Centrally acting antihypertensive drugs (central sympatholytic)
Clonidine stimulates alpha-2 receptors in brain stem which results in reduced sympathetic outflow from the CNS and a decrease in peripheral resistance leading to reduced BP and pulse rate. It does not alter normal haemodynamic response to exercise at recommended dosages.
Pregnancy category: C Lactation: Distributed in breast milk; caution advised
