    Uses of Etomid: - General Anaesthesia Anaesthesia Hypersensitivity. Reduced or at risk of reduced adrenocortical function. Porphyria.
    General (Intravenous) anesthetics
    Etomidate, a carboxylated imidazole, is a sedative and hypnotic agent used for general anaesthesia. It enhances the activity of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS, by interacting with the GABAA receptor complex.
    How to use Etomidate: Your doctor or nurse will give you this medicine. Kindly do not self administer. Administration: IV Administration Inject undiluted by direct IV injection over 30-60 sec; do not administer by prolonged IV infusion Inject into large forearm vein Adult Dose: General Anesthesia Induction 0.3-0.6 mg/kg IVP over 30-60 sec Child Dose: General Anesthesia Induction <10 years: Safety and efficacy not established >10 years: 0.3-0.6 mg/kg IVP over 30-60 sec
    Antipsychotics, sedatives or opioids; calcium-channel blockers.
    Hypersensitivity. Reduced or at risk of reduced adrenocortical function. Porphyria.
    Common - Headache - Fatigue - Weakness - Fever - Muscle pain >10% Transient injection site pain (30-80%),Skeletal muscle movements, mainly myoclonic (32%),Opsoclonus (20%),Adrenal suppression 1-10% Hiccups <1% Apnea (duration: 5-90 seconds),Arrhythmias,Hyperventilation,HTN,Hypotension,Hypoventilation,Laryngospasm,Nausea/vomiting,Oxygen desaturation,Snoring (may be associated with partial upper airway obstruction)
    Category C: Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus.
    Precaution: Opioid analgesics or benzodiazepines may be given as premedications to reduce risk of convulsions. Not to be admin by prolonged infusion. Pre-existing epilepsy. Elderly and child <10 yrs. Pregnancy and lactation. Lactation: Not known if excreted in breast milk; use caution
    Symptoms: Hypotension, resp depression, which may lead to arrest, disorientation, delayed awakening. Management: Supportive treatment. Admin of hydrocortisone (not ACTH) 50-100 mg may be required.
    Store between 20-25°C.
