How to use
Citicoline:
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it.
Citicoline may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
Administration:
May be taken with or without food. Take w/ or between meals.
Adult Dose:
Oral
Head injury; Cerebrovascular disorders; Parkinsonism
Adult: 200-600 mg daily in divided doses.
Parenteral
Head injury; Cerebrovascular disorders; Parkinsonism
Adult: Up to 1 g IM/IV daily.
Known hypersensitivity
Common
- Decreased blood pressure
- Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats)
- Stomach pain
- Diarrhea
Citicoline seems to be safe when taken short-term (up to 90 days). The safety of long-term use is not known. Most people who take citicoline don't experience problematic side effects. But some people can have side effects such as trouble sleeping (insomnia), headache, diarrhea, low or high blood pressure, nausea, blurred vision, chest pains, and others.
Precaution:
Not enough is known about the use of citicoline during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.
Citicoline increases blood flow and O2 consumption in the brain. It is also involved in the biosynthesis of lecithin.
Citicoline activates the bio‐synthesis of structural phospholipids in the neuronal membrane, increases cerebral metabolism and increases the level of various neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine and dopamine.
Citicoline has shown neuro‐protective effects in situations of hypoxia and ischaemia, as well as improved learning and memory performance in animal models for the brain aging.
Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that Citicoline restores the activity the activity of mitochondrial ATPase and of membranal Na+/K+ATPase, inhibits the activation of phospholipase A2 and accelerates the re‐absorption of cerebral edema in various experimental models.
