Uses of Cefopen:
- Bacterial infections
Respiratory Tract Infections, Peritonitis and Other Intra-abdominal Infections, Bacterial Septicemia, Infections of the Skin and Skin Structures, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Endometritis, and Other Infections of the Female Genital Tract, Urinary Tract Infections
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin.
Third generation Cephalosporins
Like all beta-lactam antibiotics, cefoperazone binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, causing the inhibition of the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins.
How to use
Cefoperazone:
Your doctor or nurse will give you this medicine. Kindly do not self administer.
Adult Dose:
Parenteral
Susceptible infections
Adult: As sodium: 2-4 g daily in 2 divided doses, increased to 12 g daily in 2-4 divided doses for severe infections given as deep IM or IV infusion.
Hepatic impairment: Max for hepatic impairment or biliary obstruction: 4 g daily. W/ renal impairment: 1-2 g daily.
Renal Dose:
Renal impairment: W/ hepatic impairment: 1-2 g daily.
Disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol. Potentiates anticoagulants.
Potentially Fatal: Enhances nephrotoxicity by aminoglycosides and furosemide.
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin.

- Increased liver enzymes
- Allergic reaction
- Anemia (low number of red blood cells)
- Diarrhea
Skin rash, urticaria; eosinophilia, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting; phloebitis; hypoprothrombinaemia; superinfection.
Potentially Fatal: Neuromuscular hypersensitivity; nephrotoxicity.
Pregnancy Category B.This drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Only low concentrations of Cefoperazone is excreted in human milk. Although Cefoperazone passes poorly into breast milk of nursing mothers, caution should be exercised when Cefoperazone is administered to a nursing woman.
Precaution:
History of penicillin allergy; renal or hepatic impairment; pregnancy, lactation; cystic fibrosis.
Cefoperazone is to be stored in a dry place, below 25°C and protected from light prior to reconstitution. The reconstituted solution may be stored for 24 hours if kept in room temperature (below 25°C).
Cefoperazone binds to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell wall, thus inhibiting biosynthesis and arresting cell wall assembly resulting in bacterial cell death.
